A Golden Day in the Golden City | Prague, Czech Republic

A good photo depends a lot on good planning. Finding the right location, determining the best time and in the end getting there. But sometimes you can plan as much as you want but in the end everything goes “wrong”. That’s how it felt this golden morning in Prague.

I had already known before the trip that I would not get much sleep in Prague. There are too many beautiful scenes and too little time to capture them all in the right light. In summer, the blue hour in the evening lasts till 11pm while the one in the morning already starts at 3am. Therefore I was very happy when I could book an apartment with AirBnB, located right at the foot of the castle. That allowed me to maximize the use of the time between (well, sleeping).

My alarm went off at 3:30am, because before the sunrise I wanted to photograph the empty alleys. Something that is simply not possible in the evening. But when I arrived at the main entrance to Prague Castle, I was surprised when I saw it closed. Somehow I had assumed you could enter the castle yard at any time – yep, apparently not.

Anyone who has been in Prague and knows where the photo was taken also knows that the way through the castle would just take 10 minutes. The way around the castle however… Well, therefore I started running the castle hill back down, through the streets of Malá Strana and then at the vineyards up again to the Prague Castle. No way that I would miss this moment of the rising sun!

Once I arrived at the spot I had in mind, I knew with the first view over the city on the Vltava River that the morning sprint was worth it. The sky turned into a powerful orange and the heart of Bohemia slowly woke up. When I turned around, a guard kindly nodded at me. And the gates of the castle were suddenly open.
