Peniche Lighthouse | Portugal

Peniche is one of Portugal‘s most important seaports, and the Cabo Carvoeiro lighthouse is one of the city’s significant landmarks. However, it is not a monument in the typical sense, as the lighthouse is still functioning. It has allowed sailors to dock safely in Peniche’s harbour for more than four centuries until today.   The […]

Berlengas Elephant | Portugal

We spotted this “elephant” while on our way back from Berlengas Island to Peniche, Portugal. Although we were traveling by speedboat at a dizzying pace (almost flying over the waves of the Atlantic) the captain of the boat slowed down at this rock formation and allowed Nico to capture the Berlengas Elephant at sunset.   […]

Berlengas Fortress | Portugal

The Fortress of São João Baptista on the island of Berlengas near Peniche has tempted Nico for a long time. The problem is that there are usually a lot of visitors around the fortress who enter Nico’s frame. So, the best time of year to visit the São João Baptista fort is winter. The trick […]

Arrábida Vineyards in Winter

Arrábida National Park is known for its scenic mountain trails with views of the ocean and picturesque coves. However, if you search the phrase “Arrábida” with the famous Uncle Google, you’re bound to find a trillion ads for tours offering wine tastings. And there’s a reason for that..   We visited Arrábida and Setúbal National […]

Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria | Germany

If literally translated from the German ‘Neuschwanstein Schloss‘, the name would be ‘Castle of the New Swan Stone’. A perfect term for this fairytale castle located near the village of Hohenschwangau in Bavaria, Germany. But why such fairytale architecture and the name of this most popular castle in the world?   According to tourist information, […]

Tróia – beach at sunset | Portugal

The Tróia peninsula near Setubal has become our regular destination when we want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. For the beach of Tróia to do its best job (calming our distracting thoughts) it must be empty for us. And this only happens… in winter.   We visit the Tróia peninsula quite […]

Pier Carrasqueira Palafitic – Comporta | Portugal

Carrasqueira is a village belonging to the municipality of Alcácer do Sal. This Carrasqueira Palafitic pier is located only 3 kilometers from the beaches of Comporta and about 15 kilometers from Tróia. The place is still used by fishermen but is also a “hidden jam” for photographers.   A few hundred meters of the Carrasqueira […]

Qatar and camels – Doha

Camels have always been friends of the Bedouins. These graceful animals can survive extreme desert temperatures, and lack of water even for weeks and can run several hundred kilometers a day carrying their riders bravely.   Today, when cars have replaced camels as transportation means, these animals are still the pride of Qataris and a […]

Santana – Madeira | Portugal

Santana in Madeira is known mainly for its characteristic houses with sloping roofs covered with straw. These houses used to be used by farmers but today they are just a tourist attraction.   May is the month when flowers bloom on Madeira. Every year the island holds a “Madeira Flower Festival” at this time. In […]

Madeira – Ponta de São Lourenço | Portugal

Ponta de São Lourenço is the easternmost peninsula of Madeira. It is one of the parts of Madeira, where traces of civilization can be counted on your fingers.   The peninsula is named after the ship João Gonçalves de Zarco, one of the three explorers of Madeira. According to legend, he is supposed to have […]

Pilgrimage Church in Wies – Bavaria | Germany

The pilgrimage church in Wies is not located in the center of a big city and is not such an obvious place to visit. When you arrive at the site, you’ll even feel like you’re in the middle of a field. However, countless tourists flock to this place every year. The church is a true […]

Zugspitze from Fern Pass | Germany/Austria

At 2962 meters above sea level, the Zugspitze is Germany’s highest alpine peak. Its slopes spread out gently in the daylight in this photo. It was taken from the Fern Pass mountain pass in Austria at an altitude of 1212 meters. The German-Austrian border runs across the Zugspitze. There used to be a border crossing […]

Antholz Lake in South Tyrol | Dolomites, Italy
Antholzersee, translated Lake of Antholz in English, is the third largest Lake in South Tyrol. Surrounded by mountain peaks, it is one of the most picturesque places in the Dolomites which we saw. When we reached this viewing point, we almost felt overwhelmed by the silence and yeah… the fresh air, which at a height of 1642 meters over the sea level, was not so easy to breathe.
Lake Tegel | Berlin, Germany
We often see this view of the Lake Tegel when we are leaving or returning to Berlin. It is always a significant moment when we smile to each other… there really is no place like home.
Laurel Forest on Anaga Mountains | Tenerife, Spain
Walking in the Laurel Forest through Anaga Mountains is like going back in time. These various subtropical trees and plants on Tenerife, once covered the southern parts of Europe and northern Africa some 20,000 years ago. Unfortunately, the woodlands from the Tertiary period are very rare to find around the world.
Bugloss on Teide Mountain | Tenerife, Spain
Ever wondered what a bugloss is? A bugloss is a plant that is widespread on the island of Tenerife, in Spain. It usually grows up to approximately 3 meters in height and you can see it on Las Cañadas del Teide. I have always wanted to see them bloom in an inflamed red shade.
Miramar Beach and Capela do Senhor da Pedra | Portugal
We visited this beach and chapel with friends one sunny winter Sunday (typical weather in Portugal). The tide was low, so we could walk around the “Capela” without even soaking our shoes. We were very lucky this day because when the tide was high, the small church would be surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean waves and so it can be very difficult to enter.
Misurina – Civetta Mountain and… a football pitch! | Dolomites, Italy
The view that magnetised me was the vacant football pitch just at the foot of the mountain. At a height of 1754 meters over sea level, we felt a little discomfort breathing and I can only imagine how challenging it would have been to play a football game in such conditions.
Vaduz Castle | Vaduz, Liechtenstein
The Vaduz Castle, located in Liechtenstein, was given this title due to its location’s capital –Vaduz. It’s the symbol of the country, a most majestic sight that I have personally experienced and this is also the home of the Princely Family of Liechtenstein. Unfortunately, this site is not open to the public, but it is still worth admiring from the outside and enjoying the views of the Alps.
Lugano Lake in the Alps | Switzerland

If you connect Switzerland with the Alpine scenery and the typical cold weather – this is the right connection, but it is not everywhere. There is a place named Lugano in Switzerland that is an Italian speaking Ticino region, where palm trees and a lot of flowers grows. The sun shines often, though, your experience […]

Picco di Vallandro | Dolomites, Italy
The wonderful thing about the Dolomites is that when you take a drive through the mountain valleys to your destination, and you look around – you will see that this route is more interesting than the end. The view on Picco Di Vallandro (translated in German – Dürrenstein) from the flourishing valley, was an absolute pleasant surprise.
Misurina Lake | Dolomites, Italy
You will immediately notice when you’re in Misurina in the Dolomites, that the air will be unlike what you’ve ever experienced. The lake Misurina and its surroundings are believed to have good air for healing respiratory diseases. From our experience, we found that breathing 1754 meters above sea level wasn’t easy, but it may just be that the views were simply breath-taking.
Autumn | Saxon Switzerland, Germany
It was funny to discover that the name “Sächsische Schweiz” comes from 17th Century. In 1766, two Swiss artists Adrian Zingg and Anton Graff joined Dresden Academy of Arts. These two artists wrote many letters comparing landscape – back then named Meissen Highlands – to their homeland. The name gained broad audience and soon enough the entire area was recognized this way.
