Ponta de São Lourenço is the easternmost peninsula of Madeira. It is one of the parts of Madeira, where traces of civilization can be counted on your fingers.
The peninsula is named after the ship João Gonçalves de Zarco, one of the three explorers of Madeira. According to legend, he is supposed to have shouted the phrase “São Lourenço, that’s enough” when he first saw this coast of the island.
The rocks that make up Ponta de São Lourenço are of volcanic origin. Due to strong winds and erosion, the vegetation on Ponta de São Lourenço is mostly grasses and bush. The landscape is somewhat atypical for the generally tree-covered Madeira.
Walking around Ponta de São Lourenço is one of the “must do” in Madeira. Before hiking, however, it is worth checking the weather forecast. Despite the sun beating down on us on this May day, some gusts of wind made the climb much more difficult. But what is not to do for such views?
