Santana in Madeira is known mainly for its characteristic houses with sloping roofs covered with straw. These houses used to be used by farmers but today they are just a tourist attraction.
May is the month when flowers bloom on Madeira. Every year the island holds a “Madeira Flower Festival” at this time. In Funchal and other towns, flower installations even “cover” the streets. The culmination of the festival is the “The Flower Parade” and the “Wall of Hope Ceremony “, when children bring and place flowers on the “Wall of Hope”. This is to symbolize the wish for peace in the world.
The flower festival was limited due to Covid this spring when we flew into Madeira. So we did not get to see the parade or participate in the festivities. However, the restrictions did not prevent the flowers from blooming. Every day, so we enjoyed seeing the luscious colors of the vegetation – just like that day in Santana.
