Peregrine Falcon | United Arab Emirates

Incredible peregrine falcon.
A Peregrine Falcon, country's national bird. Symbol of strength, courage and heritage.
I never would have thought the Peregrine Falcon would captivate me. While my journey to Dubai and Abu Dhabi with the PhotoPills team was mostly about photographing the architectural wonders like Burj Khalifa Supermoon and landscapes of the United Arab Emirates, this opportunity came open and I couldn’t not resist but to capture this beautiful bird. Later I have discovered the area’s strong relationship to falconry. Respected in Emirati tradition, the Peregrine Falcon has suffered dangers all around from habitat degradation to poisoning from shooting. Seeing the commitment of local groups striving to ensure the survival of these amazing birds for next generations humbles one.

A Master of the Skies: The Peregrine Falcon

With reaching speeds of over 320km/h when diving to capture prey, the Peregrine Falcon is known as the fastest bird on Earth. With amazing sight, these raptors can see their targets from almost three hundred meters above. Though widely distributed, they are missing from polar areas, extreme high altitudes, and rainforests. These birds have an amazing quality in their allegiance to breeding locations. Peregrine Falcons often return to the same sites; this instinct has helped environmentalists keep a good eye on their numbers.

Falconry: a UAE Tradition Rooted in History

Bedouin civilization has long included falconry as a pillar. Once vital for survival, well-trained falcons enabled hunters to gather big migrating birds for food. Falconry has developed into a national activity in the UAE today, with falcons seen as elite status symbols. These birds are highly desirable by enthusiasts who are ready to pay a premium price; a well trained peregrine falcon cost up to 100,000 euro. Particularly in safeguarding species like the Peregrine Falcon, Abu Dhabi has made major efforts in the protection of wildlife. Together with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, companies like the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) carry out preventative actions. Their efforts go beyond birds of prey to include aquatic life as well. Another great example of rooted in history sight is Dubai Creek. I was lucky enough to captured unexpected movie set while crossing it’s waters.
