Peniscola is known as a “town within the sea” and is famous because of the 14th century Templar Castle. However, it is not only Peniscola castle that is worth paying attention here. What we found especially charming in this Spanish town were the small colourful alleys of the old town. The houses on those streets have been turned into small traditional souvenir shops or restaurants and are attracting people by the sight of the vivid colours of facades and the goods displayed outside.
Peniscola’s old town is especially lively during the day, but also during the night it has own charm when the lanterns are reflecting in the cobble stones. We were here in 2014 when most of the tourists were from Spain. However, we’ve heard recently that it has become more popular among foreign tourists too. The fact that the movie El Cid and some episodes of Game of Thrones were filmed here can have something to do with this.
