Casa Batlló came first on our list when we visited Barcelona in 2023. Having loved its architecture outside on a past trip, I was excited to see the inside as well this time. I saw great wonder in Gaudí’s ability to combine use with art and the incredible Casa Battló architecture.
Unlike other museums, Casa Batlló was designed as a residence, with the owners occupying the floor boasting the largest glass windows, while they rented out the upper floors. It was supposed to be lived in, hence Gaudí made sure that every component of the design fulfilled both aesthetic appeal and usefulness. His fixation on the patterns of nature is clear. Only flowing, organic forms motivated by the natural world—there are no straight lines. You won’t miss the main floor and chandelier at Casa Battló. It was incredibly impressive, the effort that Gaudí put into designing a home for people to live and enjoy rather than for himself. Casa Battló architecture is certainly one of a kind marvel.
The Transformation of Casa Batlló
Emilio Sala Cortés first built Casa Batlló in 1877; later, textile businessman Josep Batlló y Casanovas bought it in 1903. Rather than demolishing the structure, Gaudí began a thorough refurbishment between 1904 and 1906. Reversing the outside, extending the lightwell and remodeling the interiors. He turned the building into a working piece of art. From the mosaic-covered walls to the stained-glass windows, every detail highlights Gaudí’s genius in skillful design with intent.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site today, Casa Batlló is a must-see destination for everyone studying Gaudí’s legacy. Having opened to the public in 1995, it has impressed millions of people with a window into the mind of one of the most imaginative architects of history.
