As I left the sacred place, I was now ready and excited to capture the panorama of Rila Monastery with my drone. It was incredible to see how remote this location is in the middle of the Rila Mountains. The way that this magnificent building stood by itself, surrounded by tall peaks.
The route we took was through the mountains, twisting and turning just past a charming town. The world disappeared as we traveled farther and there were no stores or homes, only the nature.
Rila Monastery was founded in the first half of the 10th century by the heavenly protector of the Bulgarians, Saint John of Rila. It’s inspiring to consider how this refuge started. A monk looking for seclusion in a cave and how his legacy grew into a massive spiritual and cultural fortitude. The same place Saint John of Rila used for solitary prayer today boasts a thriving community of monks, therefore safeguarding centuries of legacy.
While the records about the fate of the relics of Saint John from the 10th to the 14th century are detailed, for the Rila Monastery itself they aren’t many. Yet, one cannot walk through its corridors without feeling the weight of its history.
Timeless Beauty of Rila Monastery
Looking at the drone feed, the panorama revealed an architectural marvel. A fortress-like structure surrounded by dormitories where monks reside. The colorful roofs and stone walls contrasted beautifully with the lush green mountains and blue sky above.
During the Ottoman Rule (15th – 19th century), the Rila Monastery became a sanctuary for spiritual, cultural. After the liberation of Bulgaria, the monastery continued to flourish spiritually. The relics of Saint John of Rila remain a source of miracles for those who approach with faith.
I finally understood why this place holds such significance in Bulgarian history. It isn’t just about its beauty or the stunning panorama. It was built on faith, solitude, and a longing for something beyond the world’s reach.
