When you think of Downtown Dubai at night, the image that comes to mind is usually clear skies, endless skyscrapers, and the Burj Khalifa towering above it all. But sometimes, the magic lies in the unexpected.
On this particular morning, our small group had just returned from Abu Dhabi. A fog forecast had us on the road around 2:30 a.m., chasing the elusive mist that transforms Dubai into something out of a dream. Andy Marty, who knows the city like few others, once again brought us up to the rooftop terrace of the Shangri-La Hotel, a vantage point I had already come to love earlier in the trip.
By the time we set up, the fog had lifted higher than expected. Instead of a low blanket, we found ourselves standing beneath moody, mid-level clouds swirling around the skyscrapers. The Burj Khalifa pierced through them, its tip fading in and out of view. It wasn’t the “classic” Dubai fog scene—but it was better than that.
What I captured here is the Dubai you rarely see: mysterious, cinematic, almost like a frame out of a Batman movie.

The long exposure allowed the glowing highways below to stretch into golden rivers, carving patterns around the city’s skyscrapers. At the same time, I balanced the exposure to retain detail in the clouds, which gave the sky its dramatic texture.
My goal in post-processing was to emphasize that surreal contrast: the vibrant orange of the city lights against the dark, moody sky. Editing became less about enhancing what was there and more about recreating the exact feeling of standing on that rooftop in the middle of the night.
A Tip for Night Cityscape Photography
When shooting cityscapes at night, don’t just look for clear skies. Clouds—especially at the right altitude—add drama and mystery to your scene. If you’re lucky enough to catch them wrapping around skyscrapers, embrace the mood. Balance your exposure so that the city’s glow doesn’t overpower the sky. Use a tripod with a timer to ensure tack-sharp lines.
Why I Love Downtown Dubai at Night Shot
Even though we didn’t get the fog we were chasing. This photo became one of my favorites from the entire trip. It reminds me that photography is less about ticking off a checklist of conditions, and more about being present and open to what the moment gives you.
Downtown Dubai at night is always spectacular—but sometimes, it’s the unplanned, mysterious moods that leave the deepest impression.
