When you think of Bulgaria’s mountains, you probably imagine winding passes and thick forests. But rising out of the greenery, like something from a fairytale, stands the Shipka Memorial Church. And while it’s beautiful from the ground, it’s only when you take to the skies that its golden domes truly shine.
Why I Had to Photograph Shipka Memorial Church from the Air
When I planned our trip through Bulgaria, one location caught my eye immediately: the Shipka Memorial Church. I knew I had to bring my drone for this. From above, the church transforms—it doesn’t just sit within the forest, it emerges from it, the golden towers catching the sunlight against a backdrop of endless green.
The first time we arrived, the conditions weren’t right. But one advantage of staying nearby (just a 25-minute drive) is that I could wait for the right moment. A few days later, with the weather clearing and light breaking beautifully, I came back. Launching the drone into the sky, I finally captured the photo I wanted.

The History Behind the Domes
The Shipka Memorial Temple of the Birth of Christ isn’t just a striking piece of Russian Revival architecture. It’s a monument to history—built in memory of Russian and Bulgarian soldiers who fell during the Battle of Shipka Pass (1877–1878). This battle marked a turning point in the Russo-Turkish War, leading to the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule.
Standing beneath the domes, you can feel that weight of history. But when you see them from above, gleaming against the mountains, it’s almost as if they carry that story skyward.
We visited Shipka while staying in the Valley of Roses, famous worldwide for producing rose oil. This region is the heart of Bulgaria’s perfume industry, and during the Rose Festival, the air itself carries a sweet fragrance. Pairing the history of Shipka with the living tradition of the valley made this part of our journey unforgettable.
Practical Tips for Shipka Memorial Church Drone Photo
Best time to fly: Aim for late afternoon when the golden domes catch the sun.
Drone prep: Forests can interfere with signal, so plan carefully and keep line of sight.
Composition: Frame the church with the mountains in the background for depth and scale.
Nearby spots: Combine your visit with the Shipka Monument of Freedom on the pass (drone photo of that coming soon!).
