Sunset in this region of Tuscany in Italy was already glowing when we arrived at the vineyard near San Gimignano. We have photographed this area before, but that evening felt different the moment I stepped out of the car. The sky was turning a deep orange. I remember setting up quickly, almost instinctively, because I knew the window would be short.

What the photo does not show is the sound. A constant buzzing all around us. Mosquitoes everywhere. At first, we laughed it off. Then it became impossible to ignore. They were relentless, swarming our arms, necks, anywhere they could find. Daria took in the view for a minute or two, long enough to appreciate the colors and the stillness, and then she gave up. She went back to the car, doors closed, waiting it out while I stayed behind, trying to focus on the scene and not on the itching.
