Palácio da Pena in Sintra Mountains | Portugal

If you have enough money to build yourself a castle – why not make it an outstanding one?

One of the best representations of the Romanticism style in the world

The Palácio da Pena as its name is in Portuguese, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the best representations of Romanticism style in the world. Apart from the colours, there is something dreamy in this place. The castle stands alone on one of the hills of the Sintra Mountains and from every perspective you look from, the view is almost fairy tale style, almost unreal.

It combines architectural styles of Neo-gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic and Neo-Renaissance. The combination expresses romanticism (soul) very well – the need to be connected to a spiritual world, the adoration of historic glories of nations and heroes who did not fit into the mundane world.

Be sure to take a walk not only inside Pena Castle, but also around the castle itself. The view from some of the hills is remarkably outstanding and you will have an even better impression of the castle whilst seeing it from a distance. Check out another sight Castelo de Mourão in Alantejo, for its peaceful scenery.
