Praia da Rainha | Cascais, Portugal
Praia da Rainha, translated – The Queen’s Beach, is the smallest beach in Cascais, and most definitely one of the most scenic. The story tells us that the last Queen of Portugal, Queen Amelia, was so charmed by it that she proclaimed this place to be her own, hence the name.
The Square of 5th October | Cascais, Portugal
Apart from being a crossing point for many touristic paths, Praça 5 de Outubro is a lively place with many local restaurants and bars. The beach across the street in Cascais, makes a perfect place to spend an entire day, just enjoying the sun.
Peniscola Castle | Peniscola, Spain
Peniscola is the kind of town that is our favourite to visit. Beautiful with a rich history, but still not so much discovered by travellers and photographers. The Castle was built in the 13th century by Knights Templar. At some point, this Castle also became a house to Pope Benedict III.
Valencia Marina | Valencia, Spain
Valencia Marina or as officially known, Juan Carlos 1 Marina, became famous because of America’s Cup to Valencia in 2007 and was also the time when it was renovated. The fame, after its restoration, not only drew in tourist’s but also historical vessels with a view that would please any boat-lover.
Cabo da Roca | Sintra, Portugal
Cabo da Roca is the most western part of Europe. It is in Sintra municipality and is just 42 kilometres away from Lisbon. Cabo da Roca is one of the main touristic attractions in Europe, because of its geographical and symbolic meaning.
Portuguese Azulejo | Lisbon, Portugal
If you’ve ever been to Portugal, you probably know “Azulejo” very well. These are colourful tiles that are used to decorate buildings, palaces, churches, schools, etc. They are usually of different forms and tints. It was a big surprise for us to discover that in actual fact, the primary purpose of Azulejo, was a practical and not a decorative one.
Pena Palace in Sintra mountains | Portugal
We found the fairy-tale glow of the castle, which contrasted the evergreen hills of Serra da Sintra, quite unique. Each part of it had different paint and almost gave an impression of a separate building, taken out of different worlds, but with its own imaginative ornaments.
Jeronimos Monastery | Lisbon, Portugal
Golden hour is one of our favourite times to visit the Jerónimos Monastery. The tourist buses disappear briefly, and the soft evening light frames the Manueline style façade of the building and the gardens become a calm wonderland.
Palácio das Cardosas | Porto, Portugal
The centre of Porto is a fabulous place for a photographer to be. In comparison with other cities in Portugal, whereby architecture is marked by baroque, the architecture of Porto is rather monumental and dominated by granite constructions.
Porto sign | Porto, Portugal
This sign was placed just in front of the Portuguese Centre of Photography, which gave the image a very special meaning. This winter morning before the sunrise, was a perfect time to capture the installation in Porto city centre, which during the day would usually be very packed.
The Monument to the Discoveries | Lisbon, Portugal
We were very lucky to see the Monument to the Discoveries following its renovation, which was accomplished a few years ago. This shot was taken during a winter sunrise; when the sun was rising just behind the monument, softly enlightening the limestone statues. You could almost imagine the Portuguese discoverers, setting sails early in the morning and leaving the safe Lisbon shores to explore the new lands.
Wine and cheese | Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon delicacies always test the health of our bodies – in particular, our liver. With so many quality bottles of wine and cheese, it’s very difficult to survive just even a day, without trying one of these or better yet – the duo combination…
The Church of Santa Maria de Belém | Lisbon, Portugal
The Church of Santa Maria de Belém together with the Jerónimos Monastery, are the finest examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style. Though carrying similar architectural styles, in our modern world now, the church and the monastery have quite a contrasting experience.
Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) | Lisbon, Portugal
Have you ever wondered what MAAT is and what it stands for? This is an abbreviation of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology. The purpose of this modern building is to be a space for international dialogue, critical thinking and debate. Located on the coast of Lisbon in Belem, it is easy to reach and is a must-see!
The Felgueiras Lighthouse at sunset | Porto, Portugal
Porto Felgueiras Lighthouse is located on the Douro mouth, just before the river enters the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the closeness of the ocean, it often caused the waves to become enormous.
Street art | Lisbon, Portugal
This bee by Bordalo II is not difficult to find. There are more of these sculptures with various other animals in Lisbon and some are more challenging to find. If you’re a street art lover, I can only recommend that you wander around Lisbon to find more of these beauties.
LX Factory Cantina | Lisbon, Portugal
LX Factory is like a separated small city in Lisbon. It is an old industrial part of the capital which was transformed during the late 90’s to a modern art site. In our day, it has become a paradise for street photographers and store owners who do not like the traditional concepts of commerce and restaurants with a typical style.
LX Factory and a Portuguese sardine shop | Lisbon, Portugal
We found this sardine shop while visiting LX Factory in Lisbon – a city in itself. In 1896, in this part of Lisbon (Alcântara), there was a fabric factory and many other stores that also moved to this industrial site. Unfortunately, these companies did not survive the decay of the golden industrial age and soon the complex of the building was deserted.
Cristo Rei in Almada | Lisbon, Portugal
This photo was literally taken from our kitchen window. We were staying in one of the Airbnb’s in Bairo Alto, which gave us a clear view of the Tagus River, 25 Abril Bridge and the Statue of Christ the King located on the opposite shores and Almada.
Tram in Alfama | Lisbon, Portugal
Who hasn’t seen any photos of a Lisbon Tram passing through the narrow streets of Alfama? I think it’s one of the popular icons in the capital of Portugal, much like the bikes are for Amsterdam.
Antholz Lake in South Tyrol | Dolomites, Italy
Antholzersee, translated Lake of Antholz in English, is the third largest Lake in South Tyrol. Surrounded by mountain peaks, it is one of the most picturesque places in the Dolomites which we saw. When we reached this viewing point, we almost felt overwhelmed by the silence and yeah… the fresh air, which at a height of 1642 meters over the sea level, was not so easy to breathe.
Landtag of Liechtenstein | Vaduz, Liechtenstein
The Centre of Vaduz was almost empty this summer morning when we visited the capital of Liechtenstein. The main goal was to capture the Castle of Vaduz which overlooked the city and is the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. We then passed this unusual structure, which we later found to be the seat of Landtag of the Principality of Liechtenstein, also commonly known as Landtag of Liechtenstein – the Legislative Branch of the Government.
Ancient Serdica Archaeological Complex | Sofia, Bulgaria
The Ancient Serdica Archaeological Complex in Sofia, Bulgaria is a modern project that was completed in 2016. This is where ancient Roman ruins form a part of the metro station. It is very rare in Sofia to find a contrast as big, especially between the ancient and ultra-modern structures.
Lake Tegel | Berlin, Germany
We often see this view of the Lake Tegel when we are leaving or returning to Berlin. It is always a significant moment when we smile to each other… there really is no place like home.
