Number 1 on my list regarding photo spots in London was the Greenwich Observatory. It was repeatedly recommended to me on Google + because of the view over the skyline of the modern financial district Canary Wharf. Therefore our plan was to capture the sunset and also take advantage of the blue hour. But when we arrived at the hill, we had to discover that the park is fenced and the opening times are not really photographer friendly.
So instead we walked a bit along the riverside and have seen a bit more of Greenwich as planned. But that’s not a problem, it was a nice evening and we felt like being in a small town by the sea and not at all as being in the huge city of London. When the blue hour was over, we took the DLR to Canary Wharf – the first trip with an automatic metro for Daria, since such thing is not imaginable in Berlin.
Once at Heron Quays station, the illuminated colorful bridge immediately caught our attention. Daria said it would be a great object for a photo but I doubted that I can get the huge skyscrapers in my small viewfinder. However, my wide angle lens did not decline the challenge. After that we just had to wait for the right color since – according to the female advice – pink is the best choice for the photo.
For night shots, the biggest problem is the strong noise. The HDR technology enhances this problem even further. To prevent this, I strongly blurred the sky.
I wanted the buildings to stand out in the dark, so I decided to not use the full dynamic range. Instead, I left some areas white so that the glow is not lost. You can see that in particular on the pink/white lights under the bridge. To enhance the lighting effect, I then placed a vignette over the image and thus pulled the focus to the centre.
