Cologne Skyline | Germany
When we visited my old school friend in Bonn, it was clear that we had to make a detour to Cologne. The pedestrian zone was much too crowded so that we quickly left the center of the city. After a long walk by smaller streets we eventually reached the river Rhine again. And well, what can I say. We only had one day, but I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful sky at sunset.
Canary Wharf at Night | London, England
Once at Heron Quays station, the illuminated colorful bridge immediately caught our attention. My wide angle lens did not decline the challenge. We just had to wait for the right color since – according to the female advice – pink is the best choice for the photo.
Bye, Bye Berlin!
No, don’t worry, I’m not going to leave this city anytime soon. But the combination of backlights, the ICC and the Radio Tower always reminds me of trips I’ve taken outside of Berlin. Whether by car along the highway or via coach from the central bus station around the corner – often the trip started here on the western end of Berlin.
Golden Bergamo | Italy
Bergamo has the big advantage that you don’t have to search long to find a high view point. Being split in upper and lower city you always have a good view over the lower new part of Bergamo (Città Bassa). With the panorama of mountains in the back, Bergamo is still one of my favourite places in Italy.
City Palace | Potsdam, Germany
The reconstruction of the City palace, and in the same time building for the Brandenburg parliament, was finished a few months ago. Apparently, there has been a long discussion whether the palace should be rebuilt or not. And as so often, there are a lot of critics. I can only say: Awesome! Love it!
Wawel Cathedral | Poland

As a child, I was always fascinated by city models or miniatures. And just when I entered the inner courtyard of the Wawel Castle in Krakow, I saw a model of the very same thing. Not only that but the miniature is positioned in a way that you can capture reality and its copy in […]

The Best View | Berlin, Germany
It was a wise decision of the Park Inn Hotel at Berlin Alexanderplatz, when they built a viewing platform on the roof a few years ago. You can enjoy one of the best views over Berlin from up there – including a premium view on the television tower. I can recommend this hotel to everyone who comes to visit – even though, I as a Berliner never had a room there. But be careful that you book the room on
Little Old Town | Prague, Czech Republic
This photo shows the Charles Bridge in Prague, with the guard tower on the side of the historic old town. It’s the old, traditional way to get from the royal side of the city to the civil old town. Most photos from Prague are taken from exactly the opposite site of the river. The place from which I took this photo however is rarely visited by tourists. A missed opportunity, just like most photographers pack up their stuff as soon
Peleș Castle | Sinaia, Romania
After our long way down from the Bucegi Mountains, we were pretty exhausted and just wanted to find a pub to finish the day with a well-deserved beer. But when we came to a parting of the ways (one toward the town and the other one had “castle” written on it) we just had to go the extra mile. And as so often, we got rewarded for it. The Peleș Castle (Castelul Peleș) is a real beauty in the Romanian
Frauenkirche | Dresden, Germany
It’s an incredible feeling to see the Dresden Frauenkirche virtually glowing at night. The church that for such long time served as a reminder on the destruction of Dresden in the Second World War. The Frauenkirche was completely destroyed and the dark stones that you see in the wall were taken from its ruins.
Saltwater Lake | Wieliczka, Poland

You won’t have many opportunities to see a saltwater lake more than a hundred meters underground. In the Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow, you have that possibility, but only for short time. No, they don’t close the salt mine; you can still visit it in future. It’s just that the guided tour doesn’t give you […]

Eternal Flame | Olympic Stadium Berlin
Since more than 14 years I like to call the Olympic stadium in Berlin my second living room. At some point I had the thought that theoretically, the sun should shine through the 2nd side throughout the whole stadium. By the way, the sunlight is broken by the fire bowl for the Olympic flame – the Eternal Flame.
Bode Museum | Berlin, Germany
The Bode Museum on the Museum Island in Berlin is in my opinion one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Whenever I’m there it fascinates me, especially at night when the lights of the windows shine bright in the darkness. The round front makes it unique and well worth seeing again and again. Even though the Museum Island in Berlin was heavily affected by the war, the Bode Museum withstood it relatively good.
New Guardhouse | Berlin, Germany
The sculpture “Mother with her Dead Son” is the central element of the New Guardhouse (Neue Wache) near the Museum Island in Berlin. Since 1993, the New Guardhouse is Germany’s central memorial for the victims of war and dictatorship.
Commerzbank Tower | Frankfurt (Main), Germany
The Commerzbank Tower, built in 1997, was for a few years the highest skyscraper in all Europe and until 2012 the highest of the European Union. With its 257m height (300m including the antenna) and with the strong yellow illumination, the tower is not to oversee all day and night. As I was lucky enough to stand on the Main Tower right next to the office of the Commerzbank, I could capture the tower together with the old town of
Old Town Hall | Bamberg, Germany
The Old Town Hall is for me the most remarkable building in Bamberg. It was built in the 15th century in the middle of the Regnitz River and for a long time marked the border between the clerical, bishop-led Bamberg and the civil town center. Not affected by the war it was solely the river that damaged the town hall several times.
Melanchthonhaus | Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany
The Melanchthonhaus in Lutherstadt Wittenberg is one of numerous world heritage sites in the region. Philipp Melanchthon lived and worked in this townhouse in the 16th century. You can see Melanchthon as a reformer of the education system in the same way as you see Martin Luther as a reformer of the church.
Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore | Bergamo, Italy
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo was founded in 1137 and it is located in the center of the Upper Town of Bergamo. Unfortunately, we couldn’t go inside during our day in Bergamo, but also from outside it is an impressive church. Remarkable are the lion statues to find on the entrance of the church since they could be a sign that the church once was used as a court as well.
The Frankfurt Skyline at Sunset | Germany

Photography, for me, is often a dance with light, an engaging mix of anticipation and spontaneity. This became clearer than ever on one of my trips to Frankfurt, specifically when I was atop the Main Tower. I decided to experiment with capturing the Frankfurt skyline, despite the sun still being higher on the horizon than […]

St. Mary’s Basilica | Kraków, Poland

St. Mary’s Basilica on the Main Market Square in Kraków is one of the town’s famous landmarks. I already showed you the Altarpiece inside of the church; now you can see the exterior. Extraordinary are the two unequal towers; the higher one is 81m high, and the other one is 12m smaller. According to an ancient legend, […]

Lake Tegel at Night | Berlin, Germany
When in June 2011 I finally bought the Canon 500D, I obviously immediately went to Lake Tegel, 5 minutes from my home. It was pretty late already around 10pm but there was still the last light on the horizon. It was more a tryout of the new camera than a planned shooting but nevertheless: If the light is right, there is not much to do wrong. In all years that passed since then, I rarely saw a sky quite like
Altarpiece of the Dresden Frauenkirche | Germany
After the Frauenkirche was totally destroyed in the Second World War, the GDR regime decided to keep the ruins as a memorial. Finally, in 1994 Dresden begun to rebuild the church for more than 10 years. The interior of the Dresden Frauenkirche is very different from what I know of other churches. Much lighter, very friendly and kept in pastel colors. That results in a great contrast of the colors to the golden altarpiece and organ.
Pier in Sopot | Poland
The pier (Molo) in Sopot is with more than 500m the longest wooden pier in Europe. If you’re not a resident of the small town you always have to pay a little fee to enter, but anyways it was always very crowded there.
Wawel | Kraków, Poland

There are days when you wake up in the morning and even though it is still pitch black outside, you already have a feeling that the photos are going to be great today. This was such a day when I found myself more or less running through Krakow to be at Castle Wawel on time. […]
