Bergamo is a picturesque city located in northern Italy, split into two parts: the upper city (Città Alta) and the lower city (Città Bassa). The good news is that it’s easy to find a high viewpoint to enjoy a panoramic view of the city. The view of the lower new part of Bergamo with the mountains in the background is breathtaking.
Bergamo has a rich history and was founded as a settlement of the Celts in the 6th century BC. In the 15th century, Bergamo became part of the Republic of Venice, and you can see the Venetian influence in the city’s architecture.
In the Città Alta, you can visit the medieval and Renaissance buildings that make up the city’s historic center. One of the highlights is the Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful square surrounded by historic buildings, including the Palazzo della Ragione, the Torre Civica, and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.
Bergamo is also known for its excellent cuisine, including local specialities like polenta e osei (a dessert made with marzipan and chocolate), casoncelli (a type of pasta stuffed with meat and vegetables), and the famous sparkling wine, Franciacorta.
If you’re planning a trip to Bergamo, make sure to visit the upper city to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views. You can take the funicular from the lower city to the upper city or climb the stairs to get a good workout. And don’t forget to try some of the delicious local food and wine while you’re there.
