Nuremberg Castle – Imperial City
The first written mention about the Nuremberg Castle comes from the year 1050. Although, the excavation revealed that the hill of Nuremberg was inhabited well before. When you visit this fortification, you will notice it has three main parts. First, the Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg), Second, the Burgraves’ castle (Burggrafenburg) and third the “Imperial City”. On the photo, Nico captured the courtyard of the castle, with the Heathen’s Tower, Imperial Chapel and the “Deep Wheel”.
In conclusion, what we nowadays think about the medieval kings is that they had one castle where they spent their whole life. However, in Germany, as in some other countries, kings hadn’t a particular place as a sit and the early countries a capital city. Instead, they were travelling through their country visiting castles on the way. The Nuremberg Castle was one of such important imperial possessions where for few centuries German kings and Holy Roman Emperors stayed on their voyage.
