Berlin

Bye, Bye Berlin!
No, don’t worry, I’m not going to leave this city anytime soon. But the combination of backlights, the ICC and the Radio Tower always reminds me of trips I’ve taken outside of Berlin. Whether by car along the highway or via coach from the central bus station around the corner – often the trip started here on the western end of Berlin.
The Best View | Berlin, Germany
It was a wise decision of the Park Inn Hotel at Berlin Alexanderplatz, when they built a viewing platform on the roof a few years ago. You can enjoy one of the best views over Berlin from up there – including a premium view on the television tower. I can recommend this hotel to everyone who comes to visit – even though, I as a Berliner never had a room there. But be careful that you book the room on
Eternal Flame | Olympic Stadium Berlin
Since more than 14 years I like to call the Olympic stadium in Berlin my second living room. At some point I had the thought that theoretically, the sun should shine through the 2nd side throughout the whole stadium. By the way, the sunlight is broken by the fire bowl for the Olympic flame – the Eternal Flame.
Bode Museum | Berlin, Germany
The Bode Museum on the Museum Island in Berlin is in my opinion one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Whenever I’m there it fascinates me, especially at night when the lights of the windows shine bright in the darkness. The round front makes it unique and well worth seeing again and again. Even though the Museum Island in Berlin was heavily affected by the war, the Bode Museum withstood it relatively good.
New Guardhouse | Berlin, Germany
The sculpture “Mother with her Dead Son” is the central element of the New Guardhouse (Neue Wache) near the Museum Island in Berlin. Since 1993, the New Guardhouse is Germany’s central memorial for the victims of war and dictatorship.
Lake Tegel at Night | Berlin, Germany
When in June 2011 I finally bought the Canon 500D, I obviously immediately went to Lake Tegel, 5 minutes from my home. It was pretty late already around 10pm but there was still the last light on the horizon. It was more a tryout of the new camera than a planned shooting but nevertheless: If the light is right, there is not much to do wrong. In all years that passed since then, I rarely saw a sky quite like
Brandenburg Gate – West | Berlin, Germany
Most photos that you’ll see from the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin are taken from its eastern side. However, the western side of Brandenburg Gate has two advantages for photographers. For one thing you can capture the colors of the rising sun (it’s no fun to shoot a sunset at Brandenburg Gate, too many tourists) and for another thing you can catch some light trails of the passing cars.
Reichstag & Paul-Löbe-Haus | Berlin, Germany

The German government district in Berlin is a shining example of modern architecture, regardless of your opinion on the government itself. While the district is still under construction and new buildings are constantly being added, it’s impossible to deny the striking contrast between the just 10-year-old Paul-Löbe-Haus and the historic Reichstag building. Despite the contrasting […]

Brandenburg Gate with Roses | Berlin, Germany

During the yearly Festival of Lights in Berlin it is not so easy to find a good spot. The composition should be appealing, not too many people should cross the photo and it would better be something which wasn’t photographed a thousand times before. Well, I’m certainly not the first in Berlin who takes a shot of […]

Deutscher Dom | Berlin, Germany
Berlin’s Deutscher Dom (i.e. German Church, also called New Church) is part of the ensemble on the Gendarmenmarkt in the center of Berlin. And as every year it was time for the Festival of Lights in Berlin providing special illumination for all major sights. Festival of Lights means: Way to many photographers in Berlin and way too little possibilities to capture sights without people in front of it.
St Sebastian in Gesundbrunnen | Berlin, Germany

St Sebastian (also called Sebastianskirche) in the Berlin district Gesundbrunnen was constructed at the end of 19th century. It has been more or less random that we passed it, but the church was a perfect objective to try out my newest toy. Especially while travelling, I often have a lot of time during the day to […]

Rosenthaler Platz | Berlin, Germany

As you might expect, this photo from Rosenthaler Platz in Berlin is a mix of planning and luck While the scene in itself is pretty much as I planned it, the taxi in the photo is quite random. The Rosenthaler Platz in the centre of Berlin is a very busy traffic hub connecting 5 or […]

Slums in Berlin | Germany

You expect a lot of things when visiting abandoned buildings in Berlin. Used needles, broken glass, old destroyed equipment and maybe you run into a homeless person. What I didn’t expect was that: A small slum starting to develop in the centre of Berlin. New type of art from the old We visited an old […]

World Clock | Berlin, Germany
The World Time Clock on Alexanderplatz in Berlin is for me one of the most beautiful remains of the former GDR. It symbolizes how close the places on the world are. And if you take a long enough exposure, you get a feeling that it’s possible to travel a bit through time and space.
Thunderstorm at Alexanderplatz | Berlin, Germany
Taking pictures of a thunderstorm has its own charm. Especially while standing on a balcony on the 19th floor, enjoying one of the best views over the Berlin skyline. It was more of a coincidence than planned. When the rain became a thunderstorm, I thought for a second if I really want to stand up here on the balcony and keep shooting. But somehow my brain could not convince my heart to go back inside.
Alles Neu | Berlin, Germany
As you may have heard, Berlin is an eternal construction site. Even better when something is finally declared open as it was with the new metro station Brandenburger Tor. Up to this point, there are only 3 stations of the new metro line U55 opened. As for the design of the new stations I was very positively surprised and am curious of the other stations that should be finished within the next ten years.
Cannon in Tegel | Berlin, Germany
What can I say, the scene was perfect. The water was still a bit frozen, a couple of clouds in the sky and a beautiful red-orange sunset. This cannon at Lake Tegel is a present of the London District Greenwich. Reinickendorf, the Berlin district in which the lake is located, is twinned with Greenwich. Therefore also the whole promenade is called “Greenwich-Promenade”.
French Cathedral in Berlin | Germany

The French Cathedral (Französischer Dom) is one of the three buildings on the Gendarmenmarkt and across from the German Cathedral (Deutscher Dom). It was built by the Huguenot community early in 18th century and is the oldest building on the square. The other cathedral was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt after the German […]
