Qatar and Doha are unique examples of such rapidly developing countries. Can you imagine, for example, that only 30 years ago these skyscrapers did not exist? This part of Doha (the west coast) was pure desert. Here, where we think the city existed there was always just a village where the inhabitants specialized in pearl farming and fishing.
Today, Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world. Largely due to its discovered deposits of gas and oil. When we visited Doha in early 2022, we had the impression that the entire city was undergoing renovations due to the FIFA World Cup taking place in November and December. Only after a while did we realize that some part of this city is always being built or restored. Qatar was the first country we visited that is so young and already so developed. I can hardly even imagine that just 70 years ago Qatar had a population of maybe 14,000 and today it is over 2 million people!
Back to the modern city center of Doha and the West Bay skyline from the photo. In it you will find some of the most famous skyscrapers. Qatar Petroleum tower (the very blue one), Doha tower (the golden one), Palm B tower, Tornado tower (slightly back in the shape of…a tornado), and Al Jassimya tower (from left to right). The view of these skyscrapers especially at night is almost stunning.
