I caught the moment just as the sun was peeking behind the mountains while we were walking up to the top of Gubałówka covered in snow that winter. The trail, flanked by dense trees on both sides, made me anxious to find an opening. And as soon I saw the sun was starting to set, glowing the snow-capped mountains with gold tones, I rushed on, to reach an open space in the trees to appreciate the view.
Upon arriving to the clearing, a stunning vista revealed itself. Charming holiday cottages were dispersed over the terrain. Their roofs covered in immaculate Gubałówka snow. I envisioned staying in one of those houses, awakening to such a view. The peaceful beauty of this moment inspired me to want to spend a night in this spot one day, to experience this view of Tatra Mountains.

The Gubałówka Hill Funicular provides a picturesque and easy option for those who prefer not to hike. Open since 1938, the cable car connects Zakopane to the summit of Gubałówka, taking passengers up the steep incline in just minutes.
Renovated in 2001, the journey is seamless and pleasant, offering breathtaking views of the adjacent mountains during the ascent.
At the summit, tourists are presented with a spectacular vista of the Tatra Mountains in winter extending across the horizon. The vista is captivating, whether covered in snow on Gubałówka in winter or illuminated by golden hues in summer.

The slopes are ideal for sledding, skiing, or enjoying a leisurely walk along the snow-blanketed trails. The invigorating mountain air, the sound of snow compressing beneath one’s feet, and the view of remote summits illuminated by the winter sun establish an indelible ambiance. Local vendors line the area, offering traditional Polish delicacies such as oscypek (smoked sheep’s cheese) and warm mulled wine. The cozy wooden cabins and fire-lit terraces invite travelers to pause and take in the view while enjoying the rich flavors of highland cuisine.
Gubałówka in Winter
I realized that Gubałówka had made a lasting impression on me, firstly while I was capturing Zakopane in winter but also Giewont view panorama. Regardless whether it is the lively summer season or the magical depths of winter, this location has a charm that draws visitors to return. One day, I hope to return, possibly wake up in one of those marvelous residences and watch the sunrise over the valley in Zakopane, hidden gem and underrated European city.
