The first time I saw Coimbra from across the Mondego River, it felt strangely familiar. The way the city gracefully rises along the riverbank, reminded me of Prague. It was where my love for photography began there and where I also met Daria during our Erasmus semester. Sunny Coimbra seemed to mirror Prague in a way that felt deeply personal.
We stayed across the river, enjoying pastel-colored buildings in the sun, a scene that perfectly captured Portugal‘s essence.
University, Bridge and Flags
We started our day going up to the top to the university and exploring this part first. Visiting the University of Coimbra, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, was the highlight of the day. Founded in 1290, it is the oldest university in Portugal and has been a beacon of knowledge for centuries.
We came back over the other bridge as the evening set in. That’s when I made my way down to the riverside and took some other photos. One of those shots, perfectly frames the essence of Coimbra and the magic of the moment showcasing the Mondego River I already published.
I have a thing for flags—they’ve always fascinated me—and this scene felt like the perfect way to frame Coimbra. The pastel tones of the city, the deep blue sky, and the reflection of the Mondego came together seamlessly. I began walking up and down the bridge, searching for the right angle. Eventually, when I found it, I captured a photo that, to me, perfectly represented the spirit of Portugal.
