The Leiria Bell Tower is a historic landmark in the old town of Leiria, offering elevated views over the city and its surrounding landscape.
Funny story: We went to spend a long weekend in Leiria to pass our language test, the one we need to apply for Portuguese citizenship after living in the country for six years. But on the day when we were supposed to be studying, the night was so beautiful and pleasant that I couldn’t resist the temptation of a small adventure.
I told Daria, come on, whatever we don’t know by now, we will not learn it in just a few hours. And just like that, we gave in to the good weather and went out to explore the town, making our way uphill towards the castle. This is how we discovered the curious story of the city’s bell tower.
A bell tower without a cathedral, and other fun facts
The bell tower in Leiria is surrounded by fun historical facts. For example, “Torre Sineira” is the real name of this structure, but over time it has become known simply as Leiria Bell Tower. Its construction in Baroque style started after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, when structural improvements became a priority.
Probably the most unusual thing about the Leiria Bell Tower is that it is separate from the city’s cathedral. Locals often joke they have a cathedral without a tower, and a tower without a cathedral. The reason: to ensure that the sound of the bells could reach the distant parts of the city.
And my favorite historical fact: harmless as it looks, the ground floor of Leiria Bell Tower was once used as a prison, with the adjoining building later serving as the local police station.
Photographing the bell tower in Leiria
I was able to use the bell tower as a Leiria viewpoint, and this was one of the most beautiful angles that I found with the castle in the background. Standing up here, I actually used the railing of the viewpoint as a leading line, creating a nice composition.
I enjoyed taking a photo with this perspective. The bell tower in Leiria stands on elevated ground, making it a natural Leiria viewpoint. I also think wide-angle shots provide a good opportunity to capture the tower in context: the castle, the surrounding streets, and the town’s vibe.
The shadows created by the tree over the walls of the tower added an interesting detail to the frame. To get the most out of the colors, I recommend coming in the late afternoon.
What else to see near Leiria Bell Tower
- The adjoining bell‑ringer’s house was famously featured by Portuguese author Eça de Queirós in the novel O Crime do Padre Amaro. A film adaptation of this story was one of the Best Foreign Language Film Nominees at the 75th Academy Awards.
- Another scenic Leiria viewpoint, offering great panoramic views of the city, is Miradouro Ernesto Korrodi, located just a five-minute walk away from Leiria Bell Tower.
- Leiria’s Old Town square (Praça Rodrigues Lobo) is a short walk downhill from the bell tower. The square is the social hub of Leiria and has a nice atmosphere.
- Almost needless to say, you can combine your visit with the Leiria Castle and Sé de Leiria (Leiria Cathedral) to grasp the full charm of the place.
- For us photography lovers, there is a museum dedicated to photography and cinema history next to the castle and very close to Leiria Bell Tower, the MIMO (Museu da Imagem em Movimento).
