Interior Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ | Podgorica, Montenegro

Interior Cathedral of The Resurrection of Christ in Podgorica and Modern Hell

When I entered this Cathedral, I expected golden paintings so commonly seen in old Orthodox churches. My expectations though were only slightly correct.…

Look closer at the paintings depicted in this photo. What do you see? Do the colours, postures, and characters reflect something you would expect from a High Byzantine style painting? To my own surprise, in one of the paintings, I saw illustrations of Marx, Engels and Tito… rotting in hell. When I saw it, all the puzzles started to fit in place – I was surrounded by paintings of relatively “modern” people who had a great deal of influence on politics and history of Montenegro.

Later, I read that the construction of this Cathedral began in 1993 and was completed in 2013. Clearly, the most recent history had to have influenced the imagination of the author of the frescos paintings.
