When you think of Vienna’s Prater, the iconic Ferris wheel probably comes to mind first. But hidden inside the Prater Museum is something just as fascinating: the Prater Cabins Exhibition, where old gondolas are repurposed into windows to history.
Walking through this hall feels like stepping into a time capsule. Each cabin reveals a different story—miniature worlds, historic events, and faces of Vienna’s past. The vivid red gondolas, paired with colorful murals above, pull you right into two thousand years of the city’s history.
For me, this scene was special not just because of its colors but also because of its personal connection. Daria always insists on riding Ferris wheels when we travel—whether in London or Vienna. I, on the other hand, have a fear of heights. But here’s the trick I’ve learned: when I focus on photography, my fear fades. The camera becomes my anchor, and instead of worrying, I find myself absorbed in the details—the texture of old wood, the warm lights, the stories hidden in every cabin.
This particular shot was taken at 24mm, f/3.2, 1/60s, ISO 2000 on a Nikon. The dim museum lighting required a higher ISO, but I embraced it to capture the glow and richness of the colors. The key in such places is finding balance—enough light without losing the mood.
Photography Tip for Prater Cabins
If you ever find yourself in a museum or exhibition like this, here’s a trick:
Shoot wide (24mm worked perfectly here) to capture both the cabins and the surrounding murals.
Use a higher ISO confidently. Modern cameras can handle it, and noise is less distracting than blur.
Look for symmetry. Positioning the central gondola straight ahead gave this photo a sense of balance.
The result is not just documentation—it’s a photo that tells a layered story, of Vienna’s Prater Cabins, of history, and of my own quiet way of overcoming fear through photography.
