Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon at sunrise

Have you ever wondered what MAAT is and what it stands for? This is an abbreviation of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology. The purpose of this modern building is to be a space for international dialogue, critical thinking and debate. Located on the coast of Lisbon in Belem, it is easy to reach and is a must-see! Take the opportunity to visit the exhibitions, stroll through the spacious terraces and admire the view of the Tagus river and the 25 Abril Bridge.

This photo of the MAAT and the Tejo river was taken in March – it was just the perfect time to capture the sun rising from behind the pillars of “Ponte 25 de Abril”. The MAAT page informs readers that the building “rises on the riverfront with an architectural narrative that is sensitive to the city’s cultural heritage (…)”.

Whilst waiting for Nico to capture the sunrise, I simply walked around the terraces, thinking about the connections to the local traditions. I was trying to find similarities in the architecture with a general view of Lisbon, which I eventually did. The shine from the tiles that were on the base reminded me of azulejos. The smooth lines of the staircase reminded me of the corners of some old streets in Alfama. The whole shape of the building suddenly looked like a seashell in my eyes. Bingo! It was there that I finally found Lisbon!
