Two years ago, on December 30, 2022, Daria and I visited Passau in Germany, during a road trip from Berlin to Salzburg. Although Passau and it’s old town (Altstadt) wasn’t initially on our radar, it became a highlight thanks to a recommendation from ChatGPT. This detour to the “City of Three Rivers” showcased its Altstadt, stunning panoramic views, and the meeting point of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers.
Timing the Light for Perfect Photos
Our journey revolved around chasing the golden and blue hours, ensuring we experienced each city in its best light. First, we caught the sunrise in Regensburg before driving along the Danube. We timed our arrival in Passau to coincide with the golden hour, a photographer’s dream. Additionally, the cold December air added to the beauty, with frosty landscapes enhancing the scene.
Discovering Passau’s Unique Panorama
Once in Passau, we crossed to the northern side of the Danube to capture the city’s panoramic view. From this vantage point, St. Stephen’s Cathedral’s Baroque architecture stood out against the cool, wintry sky. Unlike the elevated views from the Veste Oberhaus fortress, this lower angle offered a more intimate connection to the city. The icy riverbanks, dotted with frost-covered plants, framed the scene beautifully.
Walking Along the Danube’s Enclave
Curiosity led us further along the Danube, the second longest river in Europe, to a unique stretch of land forming a German enclave surrounded by Austria. As we walked this path, the river’s serene surface mirrored the golden light, while the city’s spires and bridges created a harmonious composition. This area, known as “Passau – from inner side,” offered a peaceful and inspiring perspective.
Reflections on a Passau Altstadt Detour
Although our road trip was carefully planned, with Passau recommended by ChatGPT, the city far exceeded our expectations. The detour allowed us to capture photos that told the story of a cold yet radiant day. Then, after sunset, we continued on to Salzburg, carrying the memory of an unforgettable afternoon.
In conclusion, Passau, though a brief stop, left a profound impact. Whether you visit for photography, history, or to experience the charm of the “City of Three Rivers,” I wholeheartedly recommend making it part of your journey. After all, sometimes the detours truly are the destinations.
