Puerta de Alcalá – A Night shot | Madrid, Spain

While in this spot during the day, we discovered that you can capture Puerta de Alcalá in more detail from the small island in-between a pedestrian crossing. In the evening of that same day, I assembled my tripod in the best position, attempting to capture Madrid’s night life during the busy atmosphere. This definitive photograph took almost a half hour to capture.

Puerta de Alcalá | Madrid, Spain

Puerta de Alcalá is likely the first masterpiece seen if you travel via public transport from Madrid Airport to the City Centre. It reminded us of the Brandenburger Gate in Berlin and the symmetry of this building immediately caught our eyes – such a perfect subject for a city photographer! The gates were situated on the Calle de Alcalá, one of the oldest streets in the Spanish capital.

Patience is a valuable quality, especially for photographers. I say it because taking this particular photo was a real challenge – groups of people kept on entering and leaving, or just standing in front of the small souvenir shop behind the gate. Nevertheless, we had plenty of time and besides – it was a nice, warm evening. The right moment finally came and I took my photo, trying to capture the ancient atmosphere.

Kotor Northern Gate before sunrise | Kotor, Montenegro

Built in the 16th century as a memory of Kotor’s victory over the well-known Turkish admiral Hajrudin Barbarosa, it’s impressive that the Northern Gate is still in excellent condition. As typical for medieval times construction, next to the Kotor Northern Gate there is a moat with turquoise water. I chose this spot in the valley under Saint John’s Hill for my photo session because it offers a clear view to Kotor Fortress.

New Year 2017 | Kotor, Montenegro

If you want to have a different New Year celebration, choose a historic place as Kotor, Montenegro. What I especially liked about our visit in this picturesque city is that it wasn’t so crowded as it is during the tourist season. The Kotor gates – the entrances to the Old Town, are three. What you see here is the famous Kotor Sea Gate – the main entrance, constructed in 1555.

View from Prague Castle Gate, Czech Republic at sunrise in the early morning hours

Prague Castle Gate | Czech Republic

During our last stay in Prague I decided to make my way to Prague Castle, which was built in the 9th century as the largest ancient castle in the world, before any day trippers would be there in order to capture it in the golden light of the shy morning sun. I love to get my camera out before the day dawns and watch the world slowly wake up – to me this is very special.
