Watching the Menorca coast at sunrise is a very special experience, since this is literally the first place in the country to see the sun each morning.
This geographic position as the easternmost point of Spain makes Menorca especially captivating for photographers. However, it is not as simple as waking up and pointing your camera, as there are fundamental differences with the Menorca coast at sunset.
The best spots to capture the sunrise in Menorca
The easternmost area of the island, La Mola peninsula, offers magnificent views and the added privilege of being the first sunrise of Spain.
Lighthouses and cliffs: there is something cinematic and absolutely captivating about a lighthouse at sunrise. There are a number of them in Menorca, the ones at Cap de Favàritx and at Cap de Cavalleria are very popular for sunrise photography.
Calas along the eastern and southeastern shores are ideal for gentle water reflections in morning light.
Cap de Cavalleria Lighthouse at sunrise
One standout location for shooting the Menorca coast at sunrise is the Cap de Cavalleria lighthouse, a historic spot that rises about 94 m above sea level on the island’s rugged north coast.
This lighthouse is part of the PhotoPills camp experience where I was teaching one of my photography workshops. We drove out there in the early morning, climbed up to the cliff in total darkness, and then waited for the sun to come over the horizon.
I took this photo just before sunrise, in that magical moment when all those beautiful clouds got lit up by the sun even if it was still hiding under the horizon line. Arriving before sunrise also gives you time to explore the cliff edges and find compositions incorporating the rock formations.
Photographing the Menorca coast at sunset and at sunrise: differences
Technically, sunrise and sunset photography share many similarities, including the warm tones and the dramatic effects that the moving sun has on the landscape and the clouds. But they’re not exactly the same.
First of all, orientation matters. East-facing locations are better for sunrise, while west-facing locations are better for capturing the Menorca coast at sunset. Some spots with open horizons can work for both, but better to check in advance if any rocks, buildings, or trees are blocking the view.
Also, the Menorca coast at sunrise delivers softer, cooler tones moving into warm hues as the sun rises, whereas sunsets typically saturate reds and oranges as the sun descends. Lastly, sunrise can feel more serene, but it also presents logistical challenges. You may need to reach remote spots before dawn, sometimes in darkness, and local transport or services may not be fully operating yet, especially in Menorca. The Menorca coast at sunset tends to offer easier access.
