The Cathedral of the Birth of St. Mary in Milan, commonly known as “Milan Cathedral”, could be described in many superlatives. It is one of the largest churches in Italy and even in all of Europe. The stained glass windows in the choir of Milan Cathedral are some of the largest in the world. This cathedral also cannot complain about the number of visitors. Only before sunrise, the square in front of it empties and you can fully admire its architectural grandeur.

From the more interesting elements of the cathedral: when you get closer to the pediment you will notice the heavy iron doors. They are decorated not only with scenes from the life of Mary and St. Ambrose but also with scenes from the history of Milan.
Perhaps one of the most interesting architectural elements of the Cathedral of Milan is its crowning roof. It is decorated with 135 pinnacles, sculptures and gargoyles. Although these ornaments are barely visible from the square below the church, the church authorities have made the passageways on the roof accessible to tourists. From this level, you can admire not only the architecture of the church but also the view of Milan and in the distance – the Alps.
