San Gimignano is known in Italy as “the Town of Fine Towers”. The towers of this medieval town are visible from every point you approach on the hill that it stands on. The dozens of tower-houses are a symbol of San Gimignano but, it’s not the only symbol of this place – another, is the vineyards with the famous Vernaccia grapes!
The “Golden Ham” and Saffron
It took me two attempts and two evenings to find the right location to capture both – the towers of San Gimignano and the vineyards, where the famous Vernaccia di San Gimignano grapes grow. The first time, we tried to find a spot around the city to see the sun setting behind it, but we failed. We then decided to visit the town and buy some of the local products – the white wine that is normally not so typical for the Tuscany region. The city was originally meant to be known for the “Golden Ham” and Saffron and we wanted to verify that.
The old town was charming – the small alleys led to the main towers full of small shops with local products – various meats, typical cheese and wine from the region. Apart from that, I can say with confidence that I really adore every UNESCO World Heritage and San Gimignano without a doubt impressed me greatly.
Whilst walking around the old town from a bird’s eye view, we saw at a distance a platform which from our perspective would have been a good viewing point of the town outside.
