Athens – ancient Greek city of marble in a modern world | Athens, Greece

Panorama view of Athens in Greece, which looks like ancient Greek city.
Sea of Marble

That breath-taking view of the capital and largest city of Greece could touch any heart, I think. At least that happened with me and with all the people around me, who were enchanted by the spectacular panorama of Athens at sunset. This photo was taken from Lycabettus hill while I was waiting for the sun to set and shoot photos of Parthenon hill.

Athens – a powerful polis in ancient Greece

Polis were ancient Greek city-states, which were not ruled by emperors or kings, but by the citizens, through political structures which is called democracy. Being one of the oldest cities in the world, the capital and largest city of Greece has a recorded history of over 3,500 years.

Athens – center of modern Greece

Today, Athens is a center of culture and tourism, art and architecture, sports and business. In 2015, more than 240,000 people voted for it as the third best European city to visit. As a cradle of the Olympic movement, the sports life of this ancient Greek city is very active.

Now, when you look on this photo you might have mixed feeling. Those are modern buildings from cement which in different light could make negative impression of cement see. However, the sunset that day make them look like shining marble and evoke the thought about ancient polis.
