The Tallinn skyline at sunrise is a scene of steeples, red-tiled rooftops, and centuries-old city walls in one of Northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities.
Tallinn wakes slowly and particularly early, but it is worth being awake to witness it. To get this photograph, I woke up at 3:30 and already the sky was clearing up. It was the small, unexpected details like this that surprised me about Tallinn, and I’m happy this is how I spent my first morning there.
The “white nights” phenomenon in Tallinn
One of the most extraordinary features of the Tallinn skyline at sunrise is that the sun rises near 4 in the morning and doesn’t set until close to 11 at night, fading to a brief twilight rather than total darkness.
This phenomenon, known as white nights, is especially magical for photographers, as it provides a sunrise that lingers for hours rather than minutes. The sky moves through several colour hues before the sun fully rises, giving you enough time to try out angles and compositions.
Other European cities offer their own version of the white nights during summer, including St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Reykjavik, and Riga. But Tallinn offers something distinctive: white nights experienced against the backdrop of a nearly intact medieval skyline.
Tallinn skyline at sunrise from Toompea Hill
Nowhere does the Tallinn skyline reveal itself more completely than from the limestone heights of Toompea. I had scouted this viewpoint the day before, and I knew the rising sun would be exactly opposite the old wall and towers that surround the lower old town.
Toompea is the limestone hill at the heart of Tallinn’s Old Town, which serves as a natural elevated platform where the seat of power in Estonia has sat for nearly a thousand years.
For photographers and visitors, the hill offers two platforms. One is Kohtuotsa, on the north side of the hill, which provides a panorama over the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town, the spire of St. Olaf’s Church, and the harbour beyond.
On the other hand, the Patkuli platform, less than 200 metres away, faces north toward the harbour and medieval towers, offering an unobstructed view of the city walls. It was from the Patkuli platform that I took this photo of the Tallinn skyline at sunrise.
Toompea is home to the Estonian Parliament, housed within Toompea Castle, as well as several foreign embassies, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with its striking onion domes, and St. Mary’s Cathedral, the oldest church in mainland Estonia.
And if you find yourself walking around the Old Town after having photographed the Tallinn skyline at sunrise, I’d recommend you stop by Freedom Square. This open plaza is an important meeting point in the city and home to an interesting glass monument that commemorates Estonia’s independence.
