The Market of Our Lady of Africa | Santa Cruz, Spain

The Market of Our Lady of Africa in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (El Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África), Spain.

It was our second visit to Tenerife and we managed to find a calm morning to visit the typical Canaries Mercado. We were consumed with good feedback about El Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África in Santa Cruz, so we didn’t hesitate for too long, when we found the time for shopping.

Before I indulged in this beautiful surrounded area, I had to capture this photo.

Before entering the square of the market, I stood for just a minute and tried to fine tune the atmosphere of the area, as it appeared like no other market I had ever visited. The people were not rushing, it was a rather slow stroll and moving from stand to stand. The flowers and fresh vegetables and fruits were generous in providing this area with vivid colors. And the smell! The mixture of all possible herbs, flowers and bakery. Before I indulged in this beautiful surrounded area, I had to capture this photo.

The Market of Our Lady of Africa, had three small squares with different groceries stalls, Canarias products, Spanish tapas, meats and many other local products. The whole design of the place had a very neoclassical colonial style. What I learned later struck a chord; that the architect of the Basilica of the Virgin of the Candelaria was also the exact same architect of this area.

An hour later, with heavy bags to hand, we headed to our car. Even though I don’t particularly enjoy shopping, the experience of this area was definitely worth the visit.
