Zwinger Palace | Dresden, Germany

Here is a little secret – it’s not only kings that deserve crowns…This part of the Zwinger Palace in Dresden has one too and there is something just joyful and exciting at this Baroque ensemble!

This section is a terrace that is part of the Zwinger Palace. The building and the courtyard inside are built in a Baroque style, which was famous for the rich, colorful ornaments and striking shapes. It really is a unique experience to see and has even more exceptional beauty on a sunny day.

The name of the palace comes from the German word “Zwinger” which describes the open space between two walls. This was a narrow place where deaths occurred, due to many participants defending a castle from a siege. The “Zwingers” were built in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period.

Somehow when I think about this name, I imagine humble castles and city walls; something that looks much more different than the Zwinger Palace in Dresden. And still, there is something esoteric and poetic about this building – including the contrast of ornaments and a name that fits the Baroque style.
