Candelaria | Tenerife

A beautiful Basilica along the shore in Candelaria, Tenerife, contrasting against dark volcanic rocks and a stormy sky.

Whenever we visited Tenerife, we were lucky to stay in a spot that always seemed sunny despite the weather in other parts of the island. This unique microclimate made our trips all the more enjoyable. One day, we decided to explore nearby Candelaria, a town where sunlight bathed the streets, even as dark clouds loomed over the mountains in the distance.

As we walked along the shore, we stumbled upon a beautiful chapel. Its white facade stood out vividly against the dark volcanic rocks and stormy sky. The contrast was breathtaking. The way the blue-cyan tones of the ocean complemented the warm orange hues of the buildings made the scene feel complete. I’m really happy with how the photo turned out, capturing that magical moment when nature and architecture came together in perfect harmony.

Candelaria: A Sacred and Historic Gem of Tenerife

Candelaria is a small town on the eastern coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Despite its size, it holds a special place in Canarian culture. The town is home to the Basilica of Candelaria, dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands. This basilica is a popular destination for religious pilgrims and history lovers alike.

The Basilica of Candelaria: A Spiritual Center

The Basilica of Candelaria is located about 20 kilometers south of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Its 45-meter-tall bell tower stands out in the town, guiding visitors to this important site. The basilica is more than just a church. It symbolizes the connection between the indigenous Guanche culture and the Spanish settlers.

In 1390, Guanche shepherds discovered the original statue of the Virgin of Candelaria. They worshiped the Virgin long before the Spanish conquest of Tenerife. After the conquest, the Guanches continued their devotion in a small cave behind the current basilica. Over time, the Basilica of Candelaria was built on this sacred site. Today, it serves as a focal point for religious and cultural life on the island.

Architectural Beauty and Cultural Significance

The basilica is a stunning example of neoclassical architecture. The Government of the Canary Islands has declared it a Bien de Interés Cultural, a special designation that recognizes its historical importance. Inside, visitors can admire beautiful murals and religious artworks. Outside, the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias features impressive sculptures of the nine Guanche kings, known as menceyes. These sculptures add to the site’s spiritual and historical significance.

A Place of Pilgrimage and Celebration

Candelaria is more than just a religious site. It is a cultural and historical landmark. Every year, on February 2nd and August 15th, the town hosts festivals in honor of the Virgin of Candelaria. Thousands of pilgrims from across the Canary Islands travel to the basilica to celebrate. This pilgrimage, known as the “caminata a Candelaria,” unites people from all over, blending faith and tradition.

Exploring Candelaria and Beyond

Candelaria is a must-visit destination for its spiritual and cultural importance. It also serves as a great starting point for exploring Tenerife. A short drive away, you can find the beautiful beach of Las Teresitas or the lush Cloud Forest. For adventurers, Teide National Park offers breathtaking views of Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak. The volcanic landscapes make Tenerife a unique destination.

Candelaria combines history, culture, and natural beauty. The town offers a peaceful retreat with stunning coastal views and unique architecture. Whether you’re a pilgrim, a history lover, or someone seeking relaxation, Candelaria has something special to offer.
