Laurel Forest on Anaga Mountains | Tenerife, Spain

Walking in the Laurel Forest through Anaga Mountains is like going back in time. These various subtropical trees and plants on Tenerife, once covered the southern parts of Europe and northern Africa some 20,000 years ago. Unfortunately, the woodlands from the Tertiary period are very rare to find around the world.

No matter how many times we visit Tenerife, a hike on Anaga Mountains is a must for us. On one part of this mountain chain, you can find dry regions with low plants and within just an hour’s walk, you’ll be in the thick woodland area where the clouds almost surrounds you at all angles.

It’s a real playground for us to find compositions of the hills, laurel trees and streaks of light – but at this particular moment, a sudden enlightened path opened in front of us. This was not an easy task – during the day, even during the winter and the sun above the mountains stands so strong that it almost blinds us, despite the fact that we were wearing sunglasses. The weather conditions were changing constantly – one moment the sun would be out and within a few minutes we’d be trying to hide from the pouring rain. Climbing the mountains with our complete camera gear was exhausting too but once in a while though, when the sky would clear, we would see such a path in front of us, as you see in the picture, which made us feel like we were in the middle of a fairy tale.
