Lafayette Gallery in Doha Heritage Village "Katara"

The Doha Heritage Village is a place that manages to amaze one with its contrasts. On the one hand, “Katara” is designed to resemble a traditional Qatari merchant village. On the other hand, the entire complex has only been in existence since 2010 and is home to modern art and galleries such as French Galeria Lafayette.

“Katara” is the historical name of the State of Qatar, used before the 18th century AD. Katara – Doha Heritage Village was intended to reflect the traditional Qatari village that was located on the Corniche in Al Rumeilia Park. And indeed, if you allow yourself to get lost among the narrow streets of ‘Katara’, you may feel as if you have stepped back in time by several centuries. However, if you step out into one of the spacious squares of this Herritage Village you may be surprised to see a contemporary sculpture or a shopping centre in a completely different architectural style.

One of our favorite squares located in Doha Heritage Village was the one in front of the Lafayette Gallery. The entire architecture of this famous gallery was more reminiscent of European classicism than traditional Qatari buildings. However, the talent of Katara’s architect made it possible to fit a different style into the traditional part of the replica Qatari merchant village.

What do you think of such a modern mix of styles?
