Jerónimos Monastery | Lisbon, Portugal

Jerónimos Monastery in Belem district of Lisbon.

The Jerónimos Monastery is located in the Belem district of Lisbon, near the Shore of Tagus River. It is likely one of the most beautiful monasteries that I have seen in my life. This is mainly because of its interior and exterior features.

The Jerónimos Monastery has since been a 1983 UNESCO World Heritage Site. It perfectly presents the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture. This is what you can see in the photo; the main entrance to the monastery. As you look across the door, you can see the displays of scenes from the life of Saint Jerome.

I found the ornaments of the Manueline style somehow esoteric. The attention to detail is present and you can see the slim shapes that make a distinct impression, as this ensemble would be from another world. The exterior is a forerunner of what we can see inside – and this beauty will come in one of the next posts!
