Zabavno je bilo odkriti, da ime “Sächsische Schweiz” izvira iz 17. stoletja. Leta 1766 sta se švicarska umetnika Adrian Zingg in Anton Graff pridružila dresdenskim umetniškim akademijam. Umetnika sta napisala številna pisma, v katerih sta pokrajino – takrat imenovano Meissensko višavje – primerjala s svojo domovino. Ime se je uveljavilo in kmalu je bilo tako prepoznavno celotno območje.
