Palácio das cardosas in the centre of Porto is a fabulous place for a photographer to be. In comparison with other cities in Portugal, whereby architecture is marked by baroque, the architecture of Porto is rather monumental and dominated by granite constructions.
Palácio das cardosas or the Intercontinental hotel
A great example of the style of the city architecture would be the Palácio das Cardosas. Now used as an Intercontinental hotel. Palácio das Cardosas was built in the 19th Century in the southern part of Praça da Liberdade. You will most definitely see it if you visit the famous Avenida dos Aliados. The street that is the beating heart of Porto.
The Intercontinental hotel wasn’t there from the beginning. The Palace was built in the first part of the 19th Century as a monastery for Santo Elói brothers. After the monks were forced to leave the city, a merchant Manuel Cardoso dos Santos, bought the property and named it after himself. Therefore Palácio das Cardosas was transformed into a hotel by InterContinental Hotels Group in 2011.
The façade of the hotel has a rustic style. At the time we were visiting Porto, it was still illuminated by Christmas lights. This combination of monumental architecture with delicate elements made quite an impression. The next time we stay in Porto, we will stay a day or two in this hotel to also explore the interior. Which is expected to be spectacular.
