During the yearly Festival of Lights in Berlin it is not so easy to find a good spot. The composition should be appealing, not too many people should cross the photo and it would better be something which wasn’t photographed a thousand times before. Well, I’m certainly not the first in Berlin who takes a shot of the Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) together with the sign for the Pariser Platz. But that evening I liked that combination so much that I shot a complete series of the illuminations from there.

Most photos that you’ll see from the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin are taken from its eastern side. However, the western side of Brandenburg Gate has two advantages for photographers. For one thing you can capture the colors of the rising sun (it’s no fun to shoot a sunset at Brandenburg Gate, too many tourists) and for another thing you can catch some light trails of the passing cars.

The Brandenburg Gate is the most popular landmark of Berlin and everybody knows the Quadriga on top. For a short time it was taken by Napoleon to Paris, but since 200 years it’s located again on its traditional place. For this photo I had to go a bit through my archive. I took it almost three years ago when I wasn’t that familiar with my DSLR camera yet.
