The Ancient Serdica Archaeological Complex in Sofia, Bulgaria is a modern project that was completed in 2016. This is where ancient Roman ruins form a part of the metro station. It is very rare in Sofia to find a contrast as big, especially between the ancient and ultra-modern structures.

On this particular evening, there was a stunning sunset that we enjoyed. The old surrounding ruins, the boat sitting on the calm water and the ruins of the British Tower can all be seen on the horizon in perfect distance from one another, creating a remarkable view. With one shot, I captured this mix of sights that history shaped on the natural port of Sa Nitja. Sanisera and Sa Nitja are now archaeological sites.

On the way from our hotel to the supermarket, we discovered an ancient ruin beautifully reflecting the setting sun. I suppose the ruins are a hidden part of the archaeological area in Paphos. We tried to find some information about this site – the date it was built, how long it had been closed and its development during the golden age. Sadly, these timeworn baths appeared forgotten by tourist guides.

Fortifications of Kotor are remarkable construction, influenced by several architectural styles, with the Venetian style predominantly. Unfortunately, severe earthquakes have damaged them in the 16th and the 17th centuries. The consequences of the most recent one from April 1979 are still visible on the Kotor Fortress.

When I prepared myself for the trip to Romania, I often stumbled upon the word “contrasts” connected to Bucharest. How often can you drink a (surprisingly expensive) beer in front of a ruin? This photo is taken right in the Old Town of Bucharest and I think you get a feeling for what I mean with “contrasts”. Just a few streets further they build a new 5-star Hotel.
