There are many jokes and controversies about Pałac Kultury i Sztuki (Palace of Culture and Science) in Warsaw. However, it’s difficult to deny that over the last decades it became an icon of the capital of Poland.
Once a friend from Warsaw told us a story. Stalin once asked all communistic countries under Russia’s “supervision”, what they prefer to have from him as a present – “a subway network or a palace?” All countries chose metro, but Poland chose palace. Until today in the whole of Poland there are only 2 metro lines in Warsaw. But at least they built it with ambition. Built in 1955 Pałac Kultury I Sztuki is until today the 5th tallest building in European Union. And, until NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building in Tokyo was erected, it had been the tallest clock tower in the world.
It is a home for theatres, museums, cinemas, etc. And on the last 30th floor there is a terrace from where you can have a panoramic view of the city. Some Warsaw people even say that, from this terrace you have the best view of the city, because you don’t see the palace itself ?
