The Helix Bridge in Singapore; a design inspired by human DNA. This was something very difficult for me to imagine, even before I had actually seen it. This connection of science and architecture stunned me, and I felt that I would not be able to return to Berlin without capturing this rare composition.
The perfect view
It’s been more than three years since our visit back to Singapore. Since then, I had to process this photo in my mind, but I also wanted to approach it with inspiration. During my last visit to Singapore, it took me almost an hour to walk around and find the perfect spot to capture all the important landmarks of Singapore in the background of Helix. Once I located the perfect view, it took another hour to shoot it without pedestrians passing by and during the warm evening in April.
The Helix in Singapore is a pedestrian bridge that connects both the Marina Center and the Marina South. Built in 2010, it was finally possible to walk all around all Marina Bay on foot. The spiral pieces of the bridge are symbols of cytosine, guanine, adenine and thymine – all elements of DNA. Across the bridge there are viewing platforms. As you can imagine from this shot, the view is compelling and in one glimpse, you can see the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and the Art Science Museum.
Be sure to cross it at least once during the evening once you’re in Singapore – it’s a unique experience! The spiral lights make you feel like you are walking in a computer game and it appears as if the space will “absorb” you once you reach the second side of the bridge.
