This brilliantly colourful building in the centre of Setubal city is not a theatre or an opera house. It is the Town Hall – or “Câmara Municipal de Setúbal”. In the vicinity of this 20th-century monument, you’ll also find other gems like the Igreja de São Julião (Church of Saint Julian) and Casa da Baía – a 17th-century orphanage that was converted into a house of culture and art.
The modern town hall was not built until 1939. The previous building burned to the ground in 1910. It had stood in the city centre since 1533 and even survived the great earthquake of 1755.
Setubal (besides Lisbon of course) is our favourite city in Portugal. The centre itself is so colourful and cosy that we can walk the same paths for hours. The restaurants and the quality of food are also worth a visit.
