The Jerónimos Monastery is located in the Belem district of Lisbon, near the Shore of Tagus River in Lisbon. It is likely one of the most beautiful monasteries that I have seen in my life. This is mainly because of its interior and exterior features.
The Jerónimos Monastery has since been a 1983 UNESCO World Heritage Site. It perfectly presents the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture. This is what you can see in the photo; the main entrance to the monastery. As you look across the door, you can see the displays of scenes from the life of Saint Jerome.
I found the ornaments of the Manueline style somehow esoteric. The attention to detail is present and you can see the slim shapes that make a distinct impression, as this ensemble would be from another world. The exterior is a forerunner of what we can see inside – and this beauty will come in one of the next posts!
