Vilnius is such a perfect place to celebrate New Year’s Eve. The capital of Lithuania is located on the surrounding hills of the Vilnia river. This means that you can have many fantastic views of firework displays at midnight. A few years ago, in the centre of the city, at this time when I was visiting my friends, it was so brightly decorated and looked like it had emerged from a winter’s tale. The Cathedral Square which you see in this photo is the centre of public life – everything happens from parades, political and public events, fairs, large concerts to New Year’s Eve celebrations!
The square was built in the 19th century after the reconstruction of Vilnius Cathedral. It is now the biggest square of Vilnius, a former area dense with public renaissance and medieval buildings. This photo of the cathedral square with the Christmas Tree was taken a day before celebrating New Year’s Eve in Vilnius a few years ago. It was such a cold winter that Vilinia was completely frozen. Still, we warmed our souls with the friendliness of locals and our bodies with traditional Lithuanian liquors!
