Vestrahorn | Iceland

Vestrahorn, Vesturhorn, and Stokksnes – these are the three names of the same mountain in Iceland. It is not so easily accessible – it is about six hours drive from Reykjavík. More specifically, Vestrahorn is located on the Stokknes peninsula not far (10 minutes by car) from the town of Höfn.

Vestrahorn in winter

This photo of Vestrahorn in Iceland was taken in winter (February to be exact). If you saw this mountain in summer you would be greeted by the sight of dark brown volcanic rocks. Their composition is mainly gabbroic rock with iron and magnesium mixed in. However, when the slopes of Vestrahorn are covered in snow and the winter light takes on a blue glare, the landscape begins to look a little more…mystical.

The winter daytime view is a great time to shoot the photos there. During the day, you can also visit the black sand beach located in the south of Vatnajökull Park, where seals like to lounge.
