The Temple of Hephaestus | Athens, Greece

Probably the most amazing thing I remember about my journey to the capital of Greece, is that when you walk around the historic center of the city, you often come across to variety of temples, columns, ruins, that have survived all the way from the Antiquity to the digital 21-st century in Athens.

The history of the Temple of Hephaestus

Completed in the 415 BC, this marble building is of high architectural and archaeological significance. Greek Mythology is really fascinating and the adventures of the gods, goddesses, and other magical creatures are compelling. So, who was Hephaestus? That was the patron god of metal workers, craftsmen, and all who were dealing with fire. As you can expect, potters’ and metal-working shops have been discovered by archaeologists around the temple.

The legacy of the temple of Hephaestus in Athens

You may be surprised to find out that this marble example of fine Antiquity architecture has also inspired the design of buildings in other countries. Among them are: Vermont State House in the USA; Penshaw Monument in England; New Parliament House in Edinburgh.

If you are enchanted by Greek Mythology, and have visited the capital of Greece, it would be interesting for me to share you thoughts about the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens.

Check out as well my other blog article, where I share my experience photographing Kallithea Springs in Rhodes.
