So, here we are – on Day 2 of our visit to Kotor, Montenegro. In order to shoot this photo, I remember that we had to climb up to the Kotor Fortress by using steps that were partially destroyed. Moreover, at some points the securing wall was missing and you could see the precipice down there.
Kotor Fortress today
The entire complex of towers, gates, ramparts, etc., together with the Castle of San Giovanni and Kotor Old Town is part of UNESCO World Heritage since 1979. Unfortunately, Kotor Fortress has been damaged by several severe earthquakes but also because of erosion. If you plan to climb up St. John’s Hill in order to reach the Fortress, be very careful and watch your steps.
Restoration plan for the future
This plan provisions restoration of some of the ramparts, as well as building paths, sightseeing points, and other facilities for the tourists. As far as I understood, the European Commission has expressed interest in restoring the Kotor Fortress.
